A group of scientists from Stanford University, USA under the guidance of Wendy Mao and Lin Yu opened a new allotropic form of carbon, which can withstand more pressure, than the diamond. The new superhard form of carbon was obtained by compressing a glassy form of carbon to the pressure, which is 400,000 times greater than normal atmospheric pressure. It is expected, that the hardness of a new form of carbon is the same in all directions of focus, which makes possible its use in those branches of science and technology, which requires materials that can withstand the destructive influences.
