Yesterday, the representatives of the US Office of Naval Research reported, that in February 2012 will be held the first test of
electromagnetic gun (railgun), designed for mass production and installation on U.S. Navy ships. Tests will be conducted in
Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), which is located in Dahlgren. Electromagnetic
gun shot with an energy of 32 megajoules, manufactured by BAE Systems, has already been delivered for testing at Dahlgren. Note, that it is in the Naval Surface Warfare Center in
December 2010 was set a world record of energy of an electromagnetic cannon shot, which was
33 megajoules (1 megajoule is equivalent to the energy of a car with a mass of 1 ton at a speed of 185 kilometers per hour). Reportedly, that the railgun,
intended for mass production, testing of which will be held in this month- is able to hit the surface and ground targets at a distance of
370 kilometers. The U.S. Navy wants to establish these electromagnetic guns on the destroyers of a new type of "Zumvalt".
