Geomagnetic storm began on the Earth Sunday, 05 June 2011 12:31
Representatives of NOAA reported, that on the Earth today began a Geomagnetic storm of G2 class, and Kp index of geomagnetic disturbances has reached 6.
Scientists predict, that the Geomagnetic storm will be several days as the Sun continues to move to a new high activity, now on the Sun observed from 5 to 10 active regions. Reportedly, when the magnetic storm of class G2 can lead to failures in communication, navigation, and also affect human well-being, causing headaches and insomnia, caution should be exercised to people who suffer from diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Established, that during solar flares are explosive conversion of magnetic energy in the spot energy gamma rays, X-rays and radiation in the ultraviolet and visible spectral ranges. X-ray radiation from flares pose a real threat to the astronauts who are at this time aboard the International Space Station (ISS). To reduce the radiation dose to astronauts have already been recommended to transfer to the lander, which is covering more reliably protects against all harmful radiation.
Today is likely to cause auroras in the polar regions. If the Geomagnetic storm was now a class above, for example G3 instead of G2, then in the Moscow City would be able to see the auroras. And it's not just a guess - in 2003 and 2005, when the solar activity cycle passed its peak, and the aurora seen over Moscow, but even under a clear sky auroras is very difficult to observe in Moscow, because of the illumination from street lamps.
A magnetic storm is a disturbance of the magnetic field of the Earth lasting from several hours to several days and caused the receipt in the vicinity of the Earth perturbed streams of solar wind and their interaction with Earth's magnetosphere. This phenomenon is one of the most important elements of the solar-terrestrial physics and its practical side, usually termed "space weather".
Most often flares occur near the maximum 11-year cycle of solar activity, that we observe in June 2011. Until recently the most powerful in 25 years of observations have been Solar flare of August 16, 1989 and April 2, 2001 with the X-ray score of X20. However, on November 4, 2003 there was the most powerful ever recorded Solar flare in H28 points, the energy which, as calculations show, could be enough to supply electricity to Moscow within a few tens of millions of years.
During solar flares emit high-speed streams of charged particles, which are often called "solar wind", and when the perturbed solar wind meets on the way the Earth's magnetosphere, the site of contact start getting messy and sometimes very strong changes in the magnetic field of the Earth, which is the essence of a magnetic storm. Since the solar wind speed ranges from 500 to 1000 km / s, magnetic storm typically begins a day later - after the two flares on the Sun. That's how much time it takes the flow of charged particles to pass 150 million kilometers from the Sun to the Earth.
In 20 century in Nice (France) accidentally, it was observed that the frequency of myocardial infarction and stroke in the elderly rose sharply in the days when in the local telephone exchange in a severe violation, pending complete termination of communication. The scientists found, that disorders telephone occur during magnetic storms. On this basis, and was first concluded that heart attacks and strokes are associated with magnetic storms. Later, German scientists R. Reuter and K. Werner, an analysis of about 100 thousand traffic accidents, have established their sharp increase on the second day after a solar flare.
Found numerous cases of interaction of magnetic storms and technical systems, especially known for magnetic storm of March 13, 1989, which led to a short circuit in the main transformer, the Quebec hydropower. As a result, more than 6 million Canadians and Americans for 9 hours were without electricity. Also observed loss of satellites during strong magnetic storms, due to malfunction of the electronic control and communication systems.
After some strong flares occurred windstorms and typhoons, earthquakes and volcanoes, and today there was a volcanic eruption in southern Chile, as we have previously published an article on our website.
