Cases of monkeypox and multiple chains of transmission have been found in many European countries

According to a report on the website of the TV channel Russia Today on May 18, 2022, a rare disease called monkeypox is spreading in Europe. Following the announcement of confirmed cases in the UK, confirmed or suspected cases have also been found in several European countries and multiple chains of transmission may exist.

On the evening of May 18 local time, Spanish Health Minister Darias announced that after the Spanish National Center for Microbiology tested samples taken from patients with suspected monkeypox, seven positive cases were identified. According to a Madrid health official, patients may need to be hospitalized for treatment.

Portuguese health authorities confirmed five cases of monkeypox on the 18th and are still investigating 15 suspected cases, all of which are men with broken skin.

On the same day, the UK Department of Health also announced the confirmation of two new cases of monkeypox. Unlike the first newly diagnosed patient, these two patients were not in Africa. The first confirmed case of monkeypox, discovered on 7 May, returned to the UK from Nigeria. This means that there may be multiple chains of transmission for monkeypox in the UK.

In addition to Europe, health officials in the US state of Massachusetts have reported a confirmed case of monkeypox and are investigating whether the case is linked to the outbreak in Europe.

British Sky News previously reported that the monkeypox virus was first detected in 1958. The first case of human infection with monkeypox virus was detected in the Congo (DRC) in 1970. Symptoms in people with monkeypox virus are similar to those in people with smallpox. Initial symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion.
